Dr. Rik Westland (1985) is a pediatric nephrologist at Amsterdam UMC-Emma Children’s hospital in Amsterdam, NL. He has a strong professional interest for improving the prognosis of children with congenital kidney and urinary anomalies. Rik obtained his PhD at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam on the clinical outcome of children with a solitary functioning kidney (the KIMONO-study; supervisors: Dr. Joanna van Wijk and Dr. Michiel Schreuder). He subsequently worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the kidney genetics laboratory of Dr. Simone Sanna-Cherchi at Columbia University Medical Center (New York, USA) on the structural variation genetic backgrounds of CAKUT. He currently leads a large, national multicentre consortium (ArtDECO) to identify the aetiology as well as to predict the clinical outcome of individuals with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract.
